Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action or both. Diabetes can be associated with serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.

Comprehensive Diabetes Program
To help you learn how to manage your diabetes, we offer individual counseling for adults with certified diabetes nurse educators, dietitians and group diabetes education classes called "Diabetes University". To enroll, your medical provider must fax a referral, or you may contact us yourself. Diabetes University is usually covered by most insurance providers. Our diabetes and nutrition program has received national recognition by the American Diabetes Association for being a quality diabetes education program since May 24, 2001.

Terry Lumber, R.N., CNS, MSN, CDE, BC-ADM, FAADE
Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist and Program Coordinator
Terry is a Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist with more than 30 years of experience working with people with diabetes. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. and received her master’s degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.. Terry is board-certified in advanced diabetes management and is also a Certified Diabetes Educator. She was awarded a fellowship by the American Association of Diabetes Educators in 2012, one of 64 individuals who have received this honor. She is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association and has held numerous volunteer leadership positions with both organizations. She loves helping those with diabetes successfully self-manage this chronic condition.
Connie Scott, MSM, RDN, CSSD
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and a Board-Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics
Connie has worked in the field of dietetics for more than 27 years, serving as an active duty United States Naval Officer for 22 years. Connie’s experience as a clinical provider in medical nutrition therapy is varied and includes food service management and health promotion and wellness. She was a working member on the Veterans Administration and Department of Defense (DoD) Clinical Practice Guideline for Screening and Management of Overweight and Obesity, DoD Dietary Supplements Committee and the DoD’s Performance Nutrition Optimization working group. Her instructional areas of focus are diabetes, weight management, hypercholesterolemia, performance/sports nutrition, dietary supplement safety and general nutrition.
Miranda Shearin, RDN, CDE
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator
Miranda is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with 20 years of experience in the nutrition field. She is a graduate of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. with a Bachelor of Science degree in human nutrition, foods and exercise. She completed her dietetic internship program with the Virginia Department of Health. She has an extensive background in clinical dietetics that includes oncology, dialysis, nutrition support (tube-feedings) and wound healing. She was a Spirit of Women Healthcare Hero Nominee in 2013 and was awarded the Clinical Excellence Award at Stafford Hospital Radiation Oncology in 2012. Miranda is a native of Chesapeake, Va. and enjoys helping her community achieve better health through nutrition. She enjoys motivating people to achieve their personal goals to help them live a healthier life.
Tracy Hatfield Yoda, M.S., RDN, CSOWM, CDE
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator
Tracy has more than 17 years of experience in the nutrition field and fitness industry. She specializes in diabetes and weight management. She obtained her master’s degree in nutrition and physical activity from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. and her bachelor’s degree in nutrition and kinesiology from Norfolk State University in Norfolk. Tracy is a Certified Diabetes Educator and is a Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management. She created and runs the My Healthy Weigh weight management program for The Lifestyle Health and FitnessCenter. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and The American Association of Diabetes Educators. Tracy is passionate about helping people to live healthier lives through nutrition and exercise.
Making an Appointment
Contact your physician to discuss your participation in our program. If you do not have a physician, you can find one here. Most insurances will cover the program if you are diagnosed with diabetes and many will cover counseling for medical nutrition therapy (co-pays will apply, depending on your insurance coverage). We recommend contacting your insurance carrier prior to your appointment to ensure coverage.
Your doctor will need to write a prescription for “Complete Diabetes Education Program” or “Nutrition Counseling” and fax it to the outpatient scheduling office at 757-312-6271.

Diabetes Sisters Support Group
Are you looking for support for your diabetes treatment? Join the Diabetes Sisters who conveniently meet at the Lifestyle Health & Fitness Center most third Thursday evenings from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This is a free support group open to all people with diabetes.
