The 50 min. Wait in the examine room was solely due to the radiology dept. Who did not forward the mammogram results in a timely manner. The mammogram was at 8:30 given the 20 min.wait for the film to be reviewed I was in Dr Ruiz's exam room by 9:40 a.m. Dr. Ruis appointment was based on the mammogram results so he had to wait for them.

He is well-versed on my medical history whenever I see him, and he answers my questions completely and in a very respectful way. I am very happy that he is my doctor.The people at the front desk could be more courteous. Several times I have gone for my appointment and it has taken several minutes for anyone behind the desk to acknowledge me as I stand there. They don't seem very happy to be there.

I found the office to be outdated, cold, and unpleasant. I had to fill out pages of Intake forms that should have been done electronically, and the questions on the intake form were outdated and unnecessary. There was mildew around the ceiling vents. The exam table was very uncomfortable. The visit was not patient-focused in any way. The doctor and medical assistant were in and out of the room multiple times, while I was expected to lay on the table uncomfortably, for no reason. The building is not soundproof and I heard the doctor go over PET scan results in detail with the person in the room next to me. I waited an hour past my appointment time to see the doctor, and then waited another 45 minutes before the procedure was completed. I thought the doctor was very competent and skilled and kind, but the facility and office procedures were so outdated and unpleasant that I will not be returning.

My surgical and radiology oncologist team provided excellent care during my treatments and follow ups. I didn't have the attention of anyone that could help me navigate my concerns for what to expect post surgery ( I have developed lymphedema) and Dr Shelton recommended that I go to physical therapy which I finally did. Now, 2 yrs later - My oncology team is suggesting I go to PT sessions again.

The nurse was the sweetest ever and was very smart and pleasant and Dr. Ruiz looked as good as ever! LOL!! He is an amazing doctor in so many ways. He took his time with me during my visit and explained things in a way that was easy for me to understand, took the time to discuss my follow up options and also went above and beyond during my visit to contact another specialist to discuss my case and other possible follow up options. He let me be a part of the decisions moving forward while giving his professional advice which was very much appreciated. You can tell he truly cares about his patients. Very pleasant demeanor. My only issue was that my appointment was scheduled at 7:40am, but there was no one at the office till 8:00am, then I waited in the waiting room for another 40 minutes. I understand delays, but don't scheduled appointments if you're not open early.

Bio
A native to southeastern Virginia, Dr. Ruiz attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. He received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk and completed a general surgery residency at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke and the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Ruiz is the medical director of The Breast Center at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. He is board certified in stereotactic breast procedures and general surgery and is certified in stereotactic and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies. Dr. Ruiz participates in registry trials by Targeted Medical Education, an elite group of community-based breast cancer physicians dedicated to identifying genuine advances in the breast cancer field including percutaneous lumpectomies. He a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
