The pharmacy technician training program at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare contributes to the development of nationally certified, well-rounded pharmacy technicians responsible for various patient care skills and medication-related duties in multiple practice settings. Graduates are eligible for licensure in Virginia and other states. Graduates of the basic program will be well-prepared to continue training in an advanced pharmacy technician program or enter the workforce.

The 13-week paid program will provide an environment where trainees can employ didactic, simulation, and experiential-based learning in a variety of care settings, including community and hospital pharmacy, for a range of patient populations and through various support tasks. The trainee will be exposed to a highly motivated group of preceptors who sit on the Pharmacy Technician Training Advisory Committee (TAC) to provide program oversight. The pharmacy technician training program will develop pharmacy technicians who display professional competence and the ability to self-evaluate and continue their professional growth throughout their careers.

Student financial obligation for participating in the program: Scrub uniform expenses consistent with organization dress code requirements for pharmacy.

Graduate Performance on National Exam(s)
Graduates of our program have a 100% pass rate on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam.

Candidates must:

  1. Be attending high school, possess a high school equivalency certificate, or be a high school graduate.
  2. Have English language proficiency (including reading, writing, and speaking), assessed during the interview process.
  3. Have math proficiency sufficient to fulfill the requirements of pharmacy technician job responsibilities, assessed during the interview process.
  4. Be eligible for registration as a pharmacy technician trainee within the Commonwealth of Virginia per Board of Pharmacy regulations.

The pharmacy technician training program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

Students admitted to the program are required to register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as trainees (cost: $20) prior to commencement. Complete this step at the time of acceptance is critical to prevent delays in program start dates.

Consistent with state regulations, new pharmacy technicians must pass a National Pharmacy Technician Certification exam within 9 months of hire as a pharmacy technician trainee:

The cost of the national certification exam is reimbursed for Chesapeake Regional Healthcare employees upon successful completion.

To be registered as a pharmacy technician in Virginia, a person shall submit: 
1. An application and fee specified in regulations of the Board
2. Evidence that he has successfully completed a training program that is (i) an accredited training program, including an accredited training program operated through the Department of Education's Career and Technical Education program or approved by the Board; (ii) recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association; or (iii) operated through a federal agency or branch of the military
3. Evidence that he has successfully passed a national certification examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association.
