Chesapeake Regional Launches Hampton Roads' First Mobile Mammography Unit With 3D Technology
Chesapeake, Va. - Chesapeake Regional Healthcare (CRH) is bringing the first Mobile Mammography Unit equipped with both 2D and 3D Technology to Hampton Roads. The 40-foot unit will travel to communities and businesses throughout the region to offer quick appointments in a comfortable and discreet space. Most screenings will last about 20 minutes, and the units are set-up with a separate changing area and mammography room to provide the utmost privacy.
“Early detection, through screening, is the key to winning the battle against breast cancer, and we want to make it easy and convenient for women to get their annual mammogram,” said Medical Director of The Breast Center at CRH, Antonio Ruiz, M.D. “Research shows that many women are unable to schedule their screening due to time and budget constraints. We hope this potentially life-saving mobile service will help change that trend.”
CRH’s Mobile Mammography Unit is equipped with Hologic’s C-View ™ technology that is designed to compose a 2D image from a 3D mammogram. While image quality is increased, the amount of radiation exposure to the patient is significantly decreased. 3D mammography (also known as tomosynthesis) has been proven to detect breast cancer at a 27-percent higher rate than traditional 2D mammography, according to the journal Radiology. Additionally, a study of nearly a half-million women by The American Medical Association found that 3D mammography, combined with traditional 2D mammography, increased detection rates of invasive cancers by 41-percent and reduced additional screenings by 15-percent.
