One of a Kind In The Region: Chesapeake Regional Debuts The “Mom Mobile” For Postpartum Care

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Today, Chesapeake Regional Healthcare clinicians, donors and community members gathered to learn about the latest addition to their community vehicle fleet: the Mom Mobile. The postpartum-focused program is dedicated to supporting families by bringing trained postpartum nurses directly into the homes of new mothers and their infants.

The Mom Mobile will be used by trained postpartum nurses making comprehensive home visits to include breastfeeding support, mental health screenings, and immediate resource connections. Services include personalized follow-up care and essential items for those in need like diapers and formula.

“For many new mothers, the transition from hospital to home is a whirlwind, often leaving them feeling alone and without adequate support during the critical postpartum period,” says Shannon Roberts, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. “We provide tangible support—from lactation supplies to digital follow-up resources—for a stronger, healthier start for families.”

Southeastern Virginia faces disproportionately high maternal morbidity and infant mortality rates, particularly among underserved populations. Current 24-hour hospital discharges leave new mothers without adequate support, while postpartum complications such as preeclampsia and hypertensive disorders, affecting up to 7% of pregnancies, increase the risk of severe postpartum complications. Some goals of the program include the reduction in both hospital readmissions due to maternal blood pressure levels and other postpartum complications.

Amber Egyud, Chief Operating & Nursing Officer, says, “This is a community-focused solution that blends hands-on clinical care with a deep understanding of the social and emotional challenges new parents face. Our proactive model is designed to improve health outcomes within the community.”

“This is a revival of a program Chesapeake Regional once offered and we are so happy that the original program lead, Carol Hilton, can join us today to celebrate,” says Elisa Wills, Chief Development Officer of the Chesapeake Regional Health Foundation. “And, we appreciate our sponsors for making this happen: Banister Nissan of Chesapeake, The Mount Global Fellowship of Churches, and Hackworth Graphics.”
