Nutrition counseling analyzes your personal health needs and makes recommendations based off exercise and eating habits and can be beneficial for anyone, especially those with diabetes. Counseling sessions are conducted by Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, experienced in medical nutrition therapy and health education. Sessions are held on an individual basis. Family members are encouraged to attend when appropriate. Counseling includes three components:
- Assessment of individual health including current dietary intake, exercise patterns and lifestyle habits
- Goal setting to determine achievable health outcomes as well as body composition expectations
- Establishing an action plan to implement appropriate lifelong dietary changes. Action plans are tailored to each client

Nutrition counseling can benefit most individuals, and is especially beneficial for those with:
- Diabetes
- Prediabetes
- Carbohydrate counting
- Weight management
- Obesity and overweight
- Reactive hypoglycemia
- Hypertension
- Elevated blood cholesterol or lipids
- Heart disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Celiac disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Diverticular disease
- Other medical conditions
How to Make an Appointment
Contact your physician to discuss your participation in our program. If you do not have a physician, you can find one here. Most insurances will cover the program if you are diagnosed with diabetes and many will cover counseling for medical nutrition therapy (co-pays will apply, depending on your insurance coverage). We recommend contacting your insurance carrier prior to your appointment to ensure coverage.
Your doctor will need to write a prescription for “Complete Diabetes Education Program” or “Nutrition Counseling” and fax it to the scheduling office at 757-312-6271, or call 757-312-6137.
