Approved by the FDA for use in 2011, 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, uses a computer process to turn digital images of the breast, obtained at various angles, into very thin slices. This allows radiologists to view the breast tissue in thin layers. Our Mobile Mammography Unit is equipped with Hologic’s C-View ™ technology that allows us to compose a 2D image from a 3D mammogram. While image quality is increased, the amount of radiation exposure to the patient is significantly decreased.
A study published in the journal Radiology in 2014 noted that 3D mammography improved breast cancer detection by 27 percent over traditional, 2D mammography. Additionally, a 2014 study by the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that 3D mammography can improve the detection of more invasive and deadly cancers. The study involved nearly half a million women and determined that 3D mammography, combined with traditional 2D mammography, increased detection rates of invasive cancers by 41 percent and a and reduced additional screenings, or false alarms, by 15 percent.
