Chesapeake Regional Earns Provisional Level III Trauma Center Designation

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Chesapeake Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is now designated a provisional Level III Adult Trauma Center, an achievement that reflects its continued commitment to providing the highest quality emergency and trauma care to the community. This designation was granted by Karen Shelton, MD, State Health Commissioner, following a July 11, 2025, site team review.

“I am extremely proud of our team,” said Reese Jackson, President & CEO of Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. “Launching trauma services is a critical step in enhancing the care we provide our community, and this designation ensures that patients have immediate access to high-quality trauma care when every second counts.”

CRMC meets the state standards as a provisional Level III Trauma Center and is authorized and equipped to rapidly assess, stabilize, and treat injured patients from the time of injury to rehabilitation. The hospital offers 24/7 emergency physician coverage with a full array of surgical specialties available at all times.

Provisional Level III Adult Trauma Center status allows Chesapeake Regional to operate as a trauma center for one year while final preparations are made for full Level III verification. During this time, the hospital will continue to refine processes, enhance training, and further integrate into the state’s trauma network. At the conclusion of one year, CRMC will undergo a trauma site review to assess its performance and to ensure that the program continues to meet the Virginia trauma center standards

“Earning this provisional designation is a significant milestone for our team and for the community we serve,” said Dr. Martin O’Grady, Medical Director of the Trauma Center at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. “It reflects our commitment to providing timely, coordinated, and high-quality trauma care, and we will continue working to enhance our capabilities.”

Chesapeake Regional Medical Center serves the second-largest city in Virginia, including the southwest corner of Virginia Beach and the northeast corner of North Carolina, with a total population of 428,000. The hospital is an accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center, with surgical services that include open-heart, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, interventional radiology, urology, and ENT. In 2023, it earned Magnet Recognition® for Nursing Excellence and offers comprehensive cardiovascular care and expanding Behavioral Health services.

There are over 57,000 emergency room visits to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center every year, and more ambulance arrivals than any other hospital in Hampton Roads. The hospital is equipped with 310 beds, has a state-of-the-art 30-bed intensive care unit, 15 operating rooms, and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit.
