Region's First Robotic-Assisted Vascular Procedure to be Held on Monday, March 18
Patients with coronary artery disease will have access to new robotic-assisted technology to help perform angioplasties to restore blood flow.
CHESAPEAKE – After acquiring state-of-the-art technology to perform robotic-assisted coronary angioplasties to open clogged arteries, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center will be the first hospital in Hampton Roads, and the first non-academic hospital in the state of Virginia, to perform the procedure using the Corindus CorPath GRX System. The procedure will be performed on Monday, March 18, 2019 at 8 a.m.
Ron McKechnie, M.D., an interventional cardiologist and Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, will perform the procedure. The Corindus CorPath GRX System will provide benefits for both the physician and the patient. It will minimize the radiation that patients and medical staff are exposed to in the hospital catheterization lab while also giving interventional cardiologists enhanced visualization and precision.
After the catheter is placed into the patient and connected to the robotic arm, the physician can step away from the table and work from a console behind a radiation shielded cockpit. The new equipment minimizes occupational hazards for cardiologists who typically wear heavy, leaded aprons for hours to protect against radiation, potentially minimizing painful orthopedic injuries.
The CorPath GRX System will provide increased control and accuracy via robotic assisted operation. It also has greater clinical success in complex cases as compared to comparable manual procedures, reducing the likelihood for additional stents by 8.3% as a result of robotic precision including sub-millimeter measurement capabilities, advanced automation, and device movements as small as a millimeter.
