Nurses Week Kicks Off with Community Partners Appreciation Parade

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Nurses Week begins today and to kick off the celebration, Chesapeake Regional Healthcare recognized its nurses during a ceremony held this morning outside Chesapeake Regional Medical Center’s main entrance at 736 Battlefield Blvd., North in Chesapeake.

First, Amber Egyud, DNP, RN, NE-BC, Chesapeake Regional’s Chief Operating & Nursing Officer began by reading The Nightingale Pledge, named in honor of Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of nursing. The pledge was created in 1893 and is a statement of the guiding ethics and principles of the nursing profession. Nurses have recited the pledge for decades as they transition into the nursing profession.

Then, Chesapeake’s first responders showed their appreciation for nurses with a parade around the hospital’s front entrances—a tradition established in 2020 to recognize the nurses early in the pandemic. The highly anticipated parade is a highlight of Nurses Week.

“This kick off to Nurses Week is a favorite among staff. The Nightingale Pledge reaffirms our commitment to nursing and is very meaningful,” says Amber Egyud, DNP, RN, NE-BC, Chesapeake Regional’s Chief Operating & Nursing Officer. “The parade that follows is a heartwarming show of support for our nurses. Both events represent the beginning of a fun-filled week that celebrates the deep appreciation we have for our nurses.”
