Chesapeake Regional to Expand and Renovate - Ground Breaking Held for $85 Million Project

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Chesapeake Regional Healthcare is expanding and renovating its medical center campus to ensure that state-of-the-art, patient-centered, high-quality health care will continue to be offered for present and future generations. An $85 million Master Facility Plan Expansion Project kicked off today with a ceremonial groundbreaking in front of the hospital on North Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake.

The hospital opened in 1976 after a grassroots effort by local citizens to establish a hospital close to home. It was built for the community and by the community. Governed by the Chesapeake Hospital Authority (CHA), Chesapeake Regional is building upon their legacy by investing in the community and beginning a three-year Master Facility Plan Expansion Project to grow strategically important services to better serve patients. CHA received an ‘A’ bond rating from S&P Global Ratings enabling Chesapeake Regional Healthcare to fund the upcoming construction and renovation projects. The hospital remains the region’s only independent public hospital in the area.

Renovations include the expansion and renovation of the Sidney M. Oman Cancer Treatment Center, doubling its current size. It will bring comprehensive cancer care to the community with stereotactic radiosurgery, a PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography - Computed Tomography), and several other services required by oncology patients. The expected completion date is Feb. 2021.

A new critical care tower will add 72,000 above the existing structure, including expanding cardiac diagnostic space, surgical capabilities, and a renovated intensive care unit. The tower is expected to be complete in December of 2021.

Obstetrics rooms will be renovated and expanded to one and a half times their current size. The upgrade will bring a spa-like atmosphere family-centered care with natural healing elements. The completion date is July of 2022.

Ribbon Cutting for Chesapeake Rx
The organization held a ribbon-cutting celebration for Chesapeake Rx immediately following the groundbreaking at the hospital on Thursday. Attendees were bussed to a new retail pharmacy in South Norfolk at 2544 Bainbridge Blvd., Suite B, Chesapeake Va. “The community has had a need for a pharmacy for years and we are pleased to meet that community need,” said Amber Egyud, DNP- RN, COO & CNO at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. As the only pharmacy in South Norfolk, the full-service offerings will include a nurse practitioner on staff soon and access to immunizations, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, medical and diabetic supplies.
