Chesapeake Regional is now offering Aquablation therapy for BPH
CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Chesapeake Regional Healthcare is the first hospital in South Hampton Roads and Northeastern North Carolina to offer Aquablation therapy, an innovative new procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Unlike other treatment options, this procedure delivers relief with fewer side effects and a shorter recovery time.
“We are excited to work with our clinical partners to offer a new technology that will benefit many men in our region,” said Reese Jackson, President & CEO of Chesapeake Regional Healthcare.
Aquablation therapy is the only treatment for BPH that uses an ultrasound-guided, robotic-assisted heat-free water jet to remove tissue from an enlarged prostate. It provides long-lasting relief and improved urine flow. Technologies that use heat to remove prostate tissue can damage erectile and ejaculatory function. Most patients also benefit from leaving the hospital without a catheter.
“With Aquablation, patients have a treatment option that can be highly customized and has few risks,” said Dr. James Young, of Urology of Virginia who has completed several procedures at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. "It will undoubtedly enhance the quality of life for men in our region who choose the procedure and are affected by BPH."
Because every prostate is unique in size and shape, Aquablation enables urologists to customize the procedure for every patient. During surgical planning, ultrasound imaging and a camera (called a cystoscope), moves through the urethra to create a detailed guide to map which parts of the prostate to remove. During the procedure, a robotic-assisted system follows the surgical plan and resects the targeted prostate tissue using a heat-free water jet.
Aquablation therapy is performed in the hospital while patients are under anesthesia. The procedure typically takes an hour and may involve an overnight stay.
