Laboratory at Chesapeake Regional Awarded College of American Pathologists Accreditation

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded the laboratory at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center with accreditation after a recent on-site inspection as part of the CAP’s quality assurance process. Recognized for rigorous and robust standards, CAP accreditation elevates quality and mitigates risk to improve patient outcomes. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

“I’m very proud of the quality work produced in our Laboratory,” says Barbara Shields, BS, MT (ASCP), Director of Laboratory Services at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. “We’re responsible for a high volume of complex pathology and laboratory medicine. CAP accreditation is only possible because of the exceptional talent and best practices used by our phlebotomists, medical laboratory scientists, cytologists, histologists and pathologists.”

Dr. Amber Egyud, Chief Operating & Nursing Officer at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare said, “This accreditation is a direct reflection of the rigorous quality standards used at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and our commitment to high-quality patient care.”

During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examined the lab’s records and quality control procedures. CAP inspectors also examined staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety programs, records, and overall management.

Built on a foundation of pathologist expertise, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) partners with laboratories worldwide to elevate the quality of laboratory medicine with best-in-class solutions designed to drive operational excellence, achieve diagnostic confidence, and ensure the best patient care.
