Chesapeake Regional Medical Center Obtains First Da Vinci XI Robotic Surgical System in the State

CHESAPEAKE – Chesapeake Regional Medical Center is the first hospital in the state of Virginia to acquire Intuitive Surgical, Inc.’s latest model of the da Vinci® surgical robot. The system upgrade includes enhanced surgical technique capabilities, which can be used in many minimally invasive procedures across a wide spectrum of specialties. Its advancements allow patients less invasive surgical options, reduced pain and quicker recovery times.

Intuitive’s surgical robot allows surgeons to control all of the robotic arm’s movements seamlessly from a console. With an enhanced design, including four overhead arms that can access the body from virtually any position, the new upgrade of the da Vinci robot includes wristed instruments, enhanced 3D-HD vision for surgeons and greater capabilities for instrument attachment—customizing each surgery for the patient and surgeon. Its advancements can improve surgeries in the fields of gynecologic, urologic, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.

“Our minimally invasive and robotics surgery programs have helped numerous patients recover quickly with minimal scarring and pain,” said Stephen Lin, M.D., chair of CRMC’s robotics governance committee and a general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgeries. “The addition of the da Vinci XI Surgical System to our da Vinci SI will expand our bandwidth for robotic procedures, allowing us to schedule patients within a shorter timeframe and perform more innovative procedures with the new technology.”

Chesapeake Regional surgeons currently perform more than 400 robotic surgeries per year across a number of sub-specialties. The hospital currently has ten da Vinci trained surgeons performing robotic procedures in urology, gynecology, gynecologic oncology and general surgery. Due to continued program development and growth with the addition of the da Vinci XI, the number of surgeons performing robotic cases will increase and new specialties, such as thoracic surgery, will be added to the schedule.
