Chesapeake Regional First In Region To Implement New App, Boosting Communication With Ems And Improving Emergency Care

EMS and hospital providers will soon be able to communicate seamlessly with the tap of a button between health care teams.

Chesapeake, Va.— Chesapeake Regional Medical Center will soon be the first hospital in Hampton Roads to adopt Pulsara, a cloud-based platform that enables the secure transfer of personal health information between EMS, emergency room physicians and specialists involved in a patient’s treatment. The hospital is only the second in the commonwealth to use the new technology which allows faster treatment and more efficient emergency care for patients. Custom care teams sign on to the app and can then communicate via text, audio clips or video chat, allowing everyone to exchange information in real time, eliminating the need for phone calls and pagers.

Provided by funding from the Chesapeake Regional Health Foundation, the app will launch the first week in January allowing the area’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) access and the ability to sign in as part of the care team. Chesapeake, Currituck, Pasquotank-Camden and Navy Regional EMS teams are receiving training in advance.

The app was built by Pulsara to enhance the exchange of time-sensitive information during emergency care and allows first responders to transmit information for stroke, STEMI (an acute heart attack) and general emergency patients. The responder can input the patient’s name, symptoms when symptoms began, vital signs and any treatment being administered, such as EKG printouts from the ambulance so that physicians at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center can begin care immediately as well as prepare for the patient’s arrival.
