First of Its Kind Prone 3D Biopsy At Breast Center Offers Exceptional Breast Biopsy Experience

CHESAPEAKE, VA – Chesapeake Regional Healthcare is the first non-military hospital in Virginia to offer 3D™-guided breast biopsy, an advanced, minimally invasive technique utilizing the Hologic® Affirm™ Prone Breast Biopsy System. The new biopsy technology offers image-guided breast biopsies as the patient lies horizontally face down.

Many physicians prefer to perform breast biopsies with the patient reclining comfortably in the prone position, removed from the field of view of the biopsy instruments.

The availability of 3D™ imaging for biopsy guidance facilitates the localization and accurate targeting of lesions, including those that can be challenging to detect with conventional imaging techniques. In addition, this new biopsy technology has several key advantages over standard X-ray biopsy procedures, including faster targeting and fewer X-ray exposures, resulting in shorter patient procedure time and reduced patient dose.

“Chesapeake Regional is pleased to offer the Hologic® Affirm™ Prone Breast Biopsy System to the women in our community,” said Natalie Simmons, M.D., a radiologist who practices at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. “The ability to biopsy small areas of interest that may not be visible using other imaging techniques provides a significant advantage to physicians and patients. Our investment in this technology is another affirmation of our commitment to early breast cancer detection and diagnosis.”
