Chesapeake Regional Medical Center Nurses Honored for their Exemplary Service

Chesapeake Regional Healthcare honored two outstanding nurses during its annual Nurse Exemplar Awards Presentation on Thursday, May 12, 2016. Melinda “Mindi” Tysor, R.N. is this year’s winner and Lourdes “Ludy” Hofilena, R.N. was selected as runner-up. They were chosen as the 2016 recipients from 117 nominees.

Mindi Tysor, R.N., is a charge nurse in the emergency department. She is revered by coworkers as a role model who is able to remain focused during the toughest of medical situations and relate to the needs of the patient, their family, and her coworkers. Her co-workers recalled one incident in which an emergency department team worked tirelessly to save a six-year old girl, who was in cardiac arrest, and Tysor coached them through their own emotional battle so that everyone could remain focused. She is described as friendly, observant, compassionate, sincere, engaged and diligent.

Ludy Hofilena, R.N., is a charge nurse in the surgical/oncology unit and has been an employee since 1988. She is described as industrious, conscientious and very passionate about leading her team to meet the expectations of patients and CRMC. Hofilena’s care doesn’t stop with the patients, her coworkers noted how she is often available to help them with their patients, bring them food when they can’t leave the floor, and once helped a coworker to obtain a car after an accident. The nurses that she supervises say she is an excellent source of wisdom for them as they carry out their duty.

The awards were presented by the hospital’s Professional Nursing Council (PNC) to recognize excellence in nursing. Coworkers and managers submitted letters nominating outstanding nurses devoted to their patients and coworkers, and the PNC selected the two winners from the submissions. The nomination letters of award recipients were read at the presentation. The winner was awarded a $2,000 scholarship to further her nursing education by the Chesapeake Hospital Auxiliary, a one-hour massage, a hospital café gift certificate, a personal parking space and a Florence Nightingale pin from Long Jewelers. The runner-up received a $1,000 scholarship to further her nursing education by the Chesapeake Hospital Auxiliary, a one-hour massage, a hospital café gift certificate and a personal parking space. Their names will each be engraved on a plaque displayed in the front lobby of Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.
