Founder of National Menopause Association, Author to Speak at Chesapeake Regional

CHESAPEAKE – Karen Giblin, author, speaker and founder of Red Hot Mamas ®, a national menopause education program, will speak at the next Red Hot Mamas – Hampton Roads Chapter on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lifestyle Center. Giblin will present tips from her cookbook, co-authored with Mache Seibel, M.D., Eat to Defeat Menopause: The Essential Nutrition Guide for a Healthy Midlife. She will also be available for one-on-one questions and a book signing after the event.

Giblin’s book combines easy-to-understand healthful lifestyle tips to combat the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause with delicious and healthy recipes with input from some of America’s top chefs. It also offers culinary strategies to improve sleep, hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Many health experts identify a healthy diet as key to managing menopausal symptoms.

“Medical research indicates eating healthy and nutritiously during menopause can aid in symptom relief, and we are thrilled to have Karen speak about this topic at the only Red Hot Mamas chapter in Hampton Roads,” said Janet Huss, service line administrator of women and children’s health at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. “As a leader in menopause education, Karen’s eased the minds of millions of women, including many in southeastern Virginia.

Giblin, a former public officer in Ridgefield, Ct., founded the Red Hot Mamas in 1991 after receiving a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral ovary removal. After the surgery she commiserated with many other women who were unprepared for menopause, since the topic is considered somewhat taboo to discuss among family and friends. Giblin established the Red Hot Mamas to provide women medically-sound information about menopause, as well as to offer a support system and a voice for women dealing with menopause.

Red Hot Mamas is now a leading provider of menopause education and support programs in the United States and Canada. More than 200 hospitals and physician group practices have installed the programs to offer support to women in their community.

In 2014 Chesapeake Regional partnered with the Red Hot Mamas® to offer monthly menopause education programs aimed at providing medical information and peer support to women, men and family members dealing with the physical and psychological impacts of menopause.

The free seminars, which cover topics throughout the year that deal with the full body, are held monthly at the Lifestyle Center, located at 800 Battlefield Boulevard, North, in Chesapeake.

All women and their partners are invited to attend the seminars. To RSVP, call 757-312-5144.
