A New Way to Treat the Discomfort of Uterine Fibroids

If you have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids–or think you may have them–Acessa may be right for you.

Uterine fibroids can cause pain, heavy cycles, bleeding between periods, and other uncomfortable symptoms. Now, a same-day procedure can eliminate these tiny, non-cancerous uterine tumors without removing the uterus.

Acessa, also known as Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation (Lap RFA), is a minimally invasive procedure that heats and shrinks fibroids, alleviating their symptoms. It requires only two very small incisions: one near the belly button and another lower on the abdomen.

Is Acessa right for me?

Acessa is a good option for you if you want long-term relief for your fibroid symptoms, like heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain, while preserving  your fertility. This outpatient procedure offers quick relief and a fast recovery time. Most women will return to work within a few days and begin to feel an improvement in symptoms within the first few months.

How does Acessa work?
  1. A small camera and ultrasound probe are inserted through two small incisions in the abdomen.
  2. After the ultrasound and camera locate the fibroid(s), a device is inserted into the center of each.
  3. Targeted heat is then used to treat (ablate) and shrink the fibroid(s).
  4. The small incisions are closed once the devices are removed. The treated fibroid tissue is naturally absorbed by the body.
What are other options to treat my fibroids?

Until recently, there were only a few ways to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids, including hysterectomy, surgery to remove the uterus, or myomectomy, which is surgery to remove the fibroids. While these procedures are effective treatments for uterine fibroids, they require a longer recovery time and carry more risk than Acessa.

If you have symptomatic fibroids, or any of the associated symptoms, talk with your primary care provider about your options.
